Since its founding in 1915, the NBME has provided licensure and assessment of healthcare professionals. The board, a nonprofit organization, manages the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USLME), an assessment for medical licensure in the United States. Consisting of three steps, the exam is cosponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards.

Passing the USMLE is just one requirement for certification as an NBME diplomate. Diplomates must also hold an MD from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical school. In addition, certification requires completion of a year of graduate medical education accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education or completion of an accredited medical internship in Canada.
